SWB Turbines’ SWB-65 has been upgraded to 70
lbs. thrust. Originally designed for the U.S.
Affordable Weapons Program, and is now in a production state.
This engine has been through multiple 10 hour endurance runs,
as well as actual flight tests that have run in excess of 600 miles.
A 1kW generator has been incorporated into this engine to
power various flight control systems on the aircraft.
The engine is currently started ballistically.
This gives it the ability to be started remotely while
installed in a stationary or moving vehicle.
Currently, the engine is installed in a 800 lb. vehicle which is
boosted with a solid rocket to an altitude of 1,500 feet.
After the solid rocket booster completes its burn, the SWB
Engine Controller Unit (ECU) controls all of the sequences that lead
up to engine start-up and engine start. After the
solid rocket separates from the vehicle, the engine is then started
ballistically. From the engine being stationary
to full throttle takes less than 4 seconds.
